Before you buy: check your unit's maximum line length
A 50 ft mini split line set is the answer when the condenser can't sit right below the indoor head — a pad on the far side of the house, a run across the roofline, or a head on an interior-facing wall. But 50 ft is long enough that the first step isn't ordering copper; it's opening your installation manual. Every mini-split has a maximum total line length, and on small 9k–12k units it can be as low as 50 ft — some are less. Our length limits guide collects typical figures by brand and capacity so you can sanity-check before you commit to the route.
Long runs usually mean added refrigerant
Most condensers ship pre-charged for roughly 25 ft of line. Run 50 ft and you're well past that, so the system will need additional refrigerant — a specific number of ounces per foot over the pre-charge length, listed in your manual. Weighing in that charge takes a scale, gauges, and refrigerant handling certification: it's an HVAC-pro job, not a DIY step. Plan for that visit when you budget the install.
Watch vertical separation too
Length isn't the only limit. Manufacturers also cap the elevation difference between the indoor and outdoor units — commonly somewhere in the 30–50 ft range, and lower on small systems. A 50 ft run up the side of a two-story house can hit the height limit before the length limit, and some manuals require oil traps on tall vertical runs. Check both numbers for your model before finalizing the route.
All three sizes, one length
The 50 ft length is available in all three standard diameter pairs — match the pair to your unit's service valves, or run the size calculator:
- 1/4″ × 3/8″ — most 9k–12k BTU units (SKU LS-1438-50)
- 1/4″ × 1/2″ — most 12k–18k BTU units (SKU LS-1412-50)
- 3/8″ × 5/8″ — most 24k–36k BTU units (SKU LS-3858-50)
What's in the box
- One 50 ft insulated line set in your chosen diameter pair
- Pre-flared ends
- Insulation on both lines
If your measured route is closer to 20 ft, the 25 ft line set is the better buy — excess line should be cut to length, never coiled. For connection steps, see the install guide.
